You don’t exactly think of Sewickley as the countryside. But only a few miles off from the boutique shops and Penguins' homes is the rolling six acres of Hope Haven Farm Sanctuary, which has invited visitors to come kiss pigs and pet alpacas for 10-plus years. Founded in 2011 by veterinarian Karen Phillips, Hope Haven is a sanctuary for neglected animals, many of them rescued from inhumane factory conditions. A guiding principle is that coming to the idyllic farm and looking Boaz the mini donkey in the eyes, or feeling Wyatt the turkey’s feathers, has the power to change your relationship to animals, and in turn, “create a brighter future for the planet.” Volunteer-led tours put you face-to-face with more than 100 animal "ambassadors" including pigs, goats, sheep, emus, all manner of farm birds, and even Kerrish, the brave barn cat — reconnecting frazzled city dwellers to the natural world, even if just for a while. -Rachel Wilkinson
