Fiber artists often describe their medium as going down a rabbit hole. For Bryanne Johnson, owner of Moon & Yarn Craft Room in Bellevue, it started eight years ago when she knitted a cowl. Immediately “falling in love,” she taught herself how to weave — making the braid-stitched tassel tapestry that still hangs in her office — spin her own yarn, needle felt, embroider, quilt, and sew.
“If you’re a crafter, you want to try it all,” Johnson says. “It’s like getting your Pokémon cards.”
Johnson created Moon & Yarn Craft Room, winner of Best Fiber Craft Store and Best Third Space in Pittsburgh City Paper’s Best of PGH 2025 Readers’ Poll, to support the length and breadth of your crafting journey.
The cozy, colorful fiber craft supply store on Bellevue’s Lincoln Avenue not only aims to offer everything a fiber artist might want — though Johnson says she’s frequently stocking new bundles of alpaca-blended yarn or goose-with-a-bonnet needle felting kits — but also to be a “hangout for all fiber folk.”
Moon & Yarn, which Johnson affectionately calls the Craft Room, hosts classes, make-alongs, “spin-ins,” with spinning wheels that look right out of a Brothers Grimm fairy tale, and a weekly crafting happy hour. Every Wednesday, crafters of all interests and skill levels gather at the shop to meet new friends and simply for “the joy of making.”
Cultivating Moon & Yarn’s collaborative spirit was important to Johnson, who began as an independent artist selling woven tapestries and yarn. After working solo for six years, she found she wanted to do something more communal and outward-looking.
“I always wanted to own a yarn store, because the community aspect is so wonderful,” Johnson says. “I absolutely love being able to see what other people are working on.”
She made the leap in May 2023, first opening the Craft Room in Ross Township. Though Johnson describes Pittsburgh as a “heavy fiber-focused city and a creative city in general,” as a weaver, she also hoped to expand the local market beyond knitting and crocheting.
“There wasn’t a shop locally that had stuff for weaving and spinning and needle felt,” Johnson says. “So I wanted a space where you can get supplies for … all fiber crafts.”
After a year, the Craft Room grew, moving to a larger space in Bellevue — where Johnson has lived for 10 years — and giving the shop more room to host events.
“I always wanted my shop to be in Bellevue,” Johnson says. “And when I finally got in, I felt so lucky.”
With businesses springing up along Lincoln Avenue, Moon & Yarn’s crafting hours and workshops have become community events, with crafters chatting and wandering out to grab doughnuts at the newly opened Moochi & You dessert shop next door.
“My favorite part about owning [the] shop is truly meeting the people,” Johnson says.
