Whether we’re buying indoor or outdoor plants, the main goal is not to kill them. (Some of us do better than others.) But we have to start with healthy plants, or we’re all screwed. Brenckle’s plants are locally-grown and well-suited to the Pittsburgh climate. This family-owned business has been going strong since 1921, when Alfred C. Brenckle first began supplying vegetables to local merchants in the Strip District. Today, the third-generation family operation continues to serve the region with multiple locations. Across these sites, Brenckle’s offers a variety of plants and gardening products, from annuals, perennials, and vegetable starters to shrubs, trees, and hanging baskets — all of which we’re trying hard to keep alive, we promise. -Stacy Rounds

Best International Grocery Store
1st: Panda Supermarket
5816-5818 Forbes Ave., Squirrel Hill.
facebook.com/PandaSupermarket2017
When the first thing you see walking in is a mochi ice cream freezer, it’s easy to fall in love. Though Panda Supermarket has been quietly serving Squirrel Hill since 2017, like many of us, the pandemic gave me new appreciation for it. Not only does it stock fresh produce and frozen meals alongside rice cookers and hard-to-find cosmetics, the Asian supermarket posts its top picks from newly arrived snacks and treats — from carbonara fire chicken noodles to Korean butter rolls to Lay’s chips from China and their unrecognizable take on a Texas Grilled BBQ flavor. At Panda’s own recommendation, I recently tried matcha Kit-Kat bars, and a 72% cacao dark chocolate flavor from Japan (true decadence), saving the Mt. Fuji blueberry cheesecake Kit-Kats for my next trip. The wonders never cease. -Rachel Wilkinson

Best Menswear Shop
1st: Senseless
5124 Penn Ave., Bloomfield.
senselesspgh.com
Pittsburgh still has not shed its reputation as one of the worst-dressed cities, more than a decade after GQ notoriously ranked it in the top three and dubbed our style "Game Day Casual" or "Meth Lab Formal.” Thankfully, businesses like Senseless are here to help locals develop their street fashion and show the editors of that ungentlemanly quarterly just how wrong they are. The Penn Avenue shop specializes in vintage clothing, sneakers, and accessories, showcasing brands like Supreme, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton. Instead of running from the city’s penchant for sports wear, Senseless embraces and elevates it with a curated selection of jerseys, shorts, outerwear, and more. Check it out next time you’re seeking a sick second-hand letterman’s jacket or vintage snapback to complete your look. - Amanda Waltz

Pittsburgh is a patchwork. The city has been built up and torn down more times than most American metropolises, and, accordingly, we’ve learned to save, scrimp, reuse, upcycle. The Center for Creative Reuse is a distillation of that Steel City thriftiness. Equal parts craft store and emporium of the forgotten, PCCR is a collage artist’s paradise. Like its neighbors Construction Junction and Free Ride, this should be an environmentally-conscious yinzer’s first stop for any craft project or creative assignment. You just might find a huge bucket of plastic eyeballs while you’re at it. -Colin Williams
